Kay English, Ziegfeld girl (1929). Photograph by Alfred Cheney Johnston (1885–1971). The Library of Congress.
English performed for the Ziegfeld Theatre between 1927 and 1931, and she acted until 1958.
Florenz Ziegfeld, taken with Johnston’s portraits of Showgirls in the 1915 and 1916 Follies and at two portrait sessions of Billie Burke, his wife, that were published in Vanity Fair, hired Johnston to photograph his theatrical enterprises.
